A Completely Fake Black Dial, Screw-Down Paul Newman Daytona On Ebay, For Over $24,000

We see a lot of comically bad replica watches for sale on the interwebs (here's a fun one, just for kicks), but replica watches like this are so incredibly terrible that anyone with an iPhone and any sense of reality can figure out not to bid on them. And then there are the good fakes ?those that may use some real parts, or tell a great story about how the watch may have sat in a drawer for 25 years. You know, like this steel Patek 1463 that we spotted on eBay back in September. Well, right now, there is another would-be dream watch online ?this time with 127 bids and a price of over $24,000 with just about three days remaining. We'll break this fake down for you.

That's that watch, up there. It's a Rolex Daytona Reference 6263 with black Paul Newman dial. Now if you know anything about Daytonas, you'll know a Paul Newman is worth over $100,000. With a black bezel, it's worth over $150,000. With screw down pushers and a white dial it is worth over $250,000 if not quite a bit more. But if a Paul Newman has a black bezel, screw down pushers, and a black dial, it could be worth over $500,000 heck, one even sold for $1,000,000 in November 2022. Oh, but the thing there that makes it happen? Yeah, the dial has to be real. And in this case, it's not.

Now there are several things to look for when examining a Paul Newman dial that may tell you if it is real or not ?we won't discuss them here because with PN's, there is a true epidemic of fakes out there and we don't want to encourage anyone. But in this case, the dial is obviously wrong. If you aren't sure why, have a look at our detailed break-down the Paul Newman here ?the chart at the bottom alone will tell you.

One thing we should say is that when we say this watch is fake, we are talking about the exotic dial that currently rests on it. It is entirely possible the case case, bracelet, and movement are indeed authentic Rolex parts fake watches the seemingly honest seller states. He claims to be an expert in Valjoux movements and we have no doubt about the Valjoux 72 inside this Daytona (though we haven't seen it), but if we were just buying a movement, the bidding should've stopped a long time ago. The reason this Daytona is already above $24,000 with three days left is because people believe it to be a rare, black dial Oyster Paul Newman. Sadly, it's not.
